Purposeful Me

Find Your Voice

Recently, my mind was cast back to the first cassette tape my father made for me while I was still in primary school. He wrote the name of the band and my name on the back of the cassette tape. Seeing my name on it reminded me it was mine.

It’s no wonder I grew up loving music. There’s something about sound – the power, the emotions and the authority they carry. Musicians use the mode of music to release their sound and have a voice and through this can motivate a generation or do otherwise.

Sometimes talk show hosts ask their guests what they would like to be remembered for or what project would define their lives.

When I hear these questions, I also hear other questions including, ‘Have you found your voice? What is that message or gift you have for the world? If you could give a pearl of wisdom, what would that be?’

This time last year, the idea to write a book came to me. When I started writing it, I felt strongly that it was my gift to the world. It was that message that I wanted everyone to hear and one that has the potential to change lives.

The message is that we can be all that we were created and meant to be.

We are full of potentials that can remain untapped and owe it to our Creator, ourselves and the world to live to our full potentials.

If we could become better versions of ourselves, what’s stopping us from doing that? The answer to that is many of us don’t know the ‘how’.

We have the brilliant ideas, passions, hopes and dreams but we don’t know where to start. Sometimes the ideas are so far out that it becomes daunting and we become paralysed.

As a project manager, I find myself in different environments, dealing with new sets of people and problems. Frankly speaking at the start of every new project, you feel lost, sometimes daunted and definitely challenged. This doesn’t last long because you’re not playing a guessing game.

You are using the right methodology, tools and techniques to navigate the challenges of the new landscape, to understand the opportunities, identify the right solutions and implement them.

The beauty of it is that at the end of the process, you look back amazed at what you’ve accomplished.

This is not different from our own life goals, ambitions or purpose. We can learn from how a project manager would approach a similar requirement in the workplace.

The idea to use my two decades of project management experience to teach people how to deliver their own ‘personal or life’ projects led to the book, ‘The Purposeful Life Project’.

I explain how the project management thought process, tools and techniques can be applied in a personal setting and the beauty is that it’s as simple as can be.

At the end of the book, I felt like I had found my own voice – my message and contribution to the world if you will. It was a great feeling knowing I had given something back to the world.

I found there were books that tell you how to discover purpose but struggled to find books that show you how to fulfil it and navigate the potential challenges on your journey.

If  you are dissatisfied with your status quo or have an ambitious goal with no clue how to go about it, now you have a tool that can help you do it. That tool is ‘The Purposeful Life Project’

As we approach a new year, this is a great time to start thinking about your voice. Have you found it? Did you use it? Did it convey your message?

If you are yet to find and use it, then make this a goal for 2019 and get the book so you have the tools to make it happen.
