Purposeful Me

Home, Sweet Home

We all have homes and places that remind us of homes. Some of us are fortunate to have multiple homes. A home is different from a house. One makes you feel complete, safe, loved and nurtured whilst the other merely provides a shelter.

We can all make a house feel like home if we are willing to put some thought and effort into it. It takes work to create a space that feels like haven of peace, love, comfort and tranquillity.

You don’t need to own a house to make it your home and you don’t need to live there forever to put in the effort to make it special.

You just need to care enough about yourself and believe you deserve the very best you can make happen.

But what about a much more important home, the home that houses our spirit. Yes, what about our bodies? This is by far the most important home that any of us will build and maintain to live in.

I love the the quote from Becca Lee which says, “This is my home, you see, so no longer will I let it be a place of shame or a vessel of insecurity. It will be my chapel of forgiveness and a palace of respect.”

Do you see your body as a home that is worth it? What price are you willing to pay to make your body a home you’re proud of and able to enjoy? Do you respect your home?

Unlike other homes, where we get to have choices or even blessed to have multiple homes, our bodies only come in one version. It’s the only home you will have while on earth.

This is a sobering thought and we need to take a moment to ponder on that. If this body is to last us for all our years on earth, what must we do differently?

Make your home safe and secure

Take steps to protect your body, spirit and soul. Mind what you feed on and drink. This includes physical, mental, emotional and psychological food. Part of having a healthy body is paying attention and having some self discipline and exercising restraint.

In the same way, that you can’t bring junk into your physical house and still expect it to be nice, calming and peaceful, you can take junk into your body and mind whilst expecting a junk-less body. Guard your house.

Do routine maintenance

Every house no matter how well decorated will eventually look tired and worn out from use unless it is maintained. This means routinely giving the house a fresh coat of paint, making needed adjustments as needed.

In the same way, we need to pay attention to those changes we must make to keep our bodies in as close a shape as it can be to the best version.

Resolve issues early

A small leak will, eventually result in a bigger damage. A broken fence will allow all sorts in and an untamed garden soon gets out of hand. These things will happen unless we intervene.

For your body, intervene early. Listen to what your body is telling you, get check-ups done on time. Use your medications and avoid self-medicating.

You have a better chance of surviving even serious conditions if you figure things out quickly. Don’t let fear hold you back because information is your best friend in resolving issues early.

Embrace self-care and self-love

No one should care more about your space than you because you’re the one living there and enjoying the benefits or lack of it. In the same way no one can love or care for you in the way you deserve unless you already understand and practice self love and self care.

Self care includes having a healthy balance in how we live our lives, taking time to learn and grow, knowing ourselves and understanding what excites, inspires and challenges us. It includes going after these things once we figure them out.

I had a neighbour who insisted people come round the back door with a no-shoe policy once inside because of the pure white carpet in the hallway and living room. Rightly or wrongly, she set her boundaries that had to be respected.

What boundaries do you need to set for others to respect as it pertains to you? Do you feel pressure to drink, smoke or have a poor diet because of the companies you keep? If so, why?

Set your boundaries because you’re the only one responsible for you and the one who will have to deal with the consequences.
