Dreams don’t die. Dreamers do
When we think of big dreams, many people instantly come to mind. Martin Luther King Jr’s unforgettable speech about having a dream, Nelson Mandela’s dream for his people, and Steve Jobs to name just a few.
Dreams are powerful whether it’s the ones we dream when we sleep or the ones we have in our waking moments. Through the Bible we see dreams save the life of baby Jesus and the nation of Egypt was saved from famine because of the dreams of a slave boy – Joseph.
We all have dreams. Some of us will lose sight of our dreams because frankly speaking ‘Life’ happens or ‘We’ happen. Dreams do not come to pass unless the dreamer takes steps to make them happen.
Remember dreams don’t die, but dreamers do. There’s always someone else with a similar dream which is why you see your dreams being fulfilled by others. If you don’t do it in your lifetime, others will. Don’t die with your dreams unfulfilled, talents untapped and gifts unused.
What’s fuelling your dream?
Growing up in Nigeria, I was surrounded by books. I read Encyclopaedia Brittanica – all twelve volumes, huge science books, the Bible and other books on philosophy.
One of my earliest memories was flipping through two new books that my dad had just bought for my brother and I – ‘A Guide To Confident Living’ and ‘The Power Of Positive Thinking’. I remember looking through the pages and wondering where the pictures were.
They were just words and the six or seven year old me was disappointed but the titles of the books grabbed my attention and continues to hold it. That became the start of how I began to see myself and others.
It would also become a huge driver for my life and my passion for problem solving and improvements – self improvement, improvement of others, improvement of processes and improvement of businesses.
Dreams can be fuelled by the problems, challenges, injustices and opportunities that we suffer or see.
Take time to reflect
We are all created for a reason and with a purpose in mind. I have no doubt about that otherwise our existence would be pointless. We have gifts and talents to help us make a difference though some of us need help discovering them.
Our assignment is to discover our strengths, embrace our talents and use them for the greater good of making this world a better place. Take time to reflect and rediscover dreams you have given up on or buried. Sometimes we try and fulfil a dream before its time or before we are ready.
Learn from your mistakes and carry on. Failure is not a reason to give up on your dreams. You have this ONE life to fulfil them. Don’t stand in the way of your dreams by allowing excuses, regrets and procrastinations.
It’s never too late to make it happen
This week, I fulfilled another dream. For over 25 years, I have nursed the dream of creating accessories that carry a message for and from the users.
I wanted people to be surrounded by words that would challenge, motivate, encourage and inspire them to be all they were designed to be. I always believe we can be and do all we are created for; but some of us need a little help along the way.
Help comes from God, colleagues, mentors, coaches, friends and family. Sometimes the help is disguised as an offence, disappointment, problem, rejection, heartbreak, denial or a crisis like COVID-19.
When we sift through the rubbles or peel back the layers, we find the hidden gem in the form of a kick up the backside, a dormant creativity, determination to succeed or a willingness to fight back.
This week, I launched a range of clothing designs and accessories on Teesprings. This is a dream come true and I’m excited to share this new chapter of ‘Purposeful Me’ with you.
