It’s Makeover Time
People across all nations have been tied up at home for upwards of five months. Who would have thought that could happen in a conflict free period? Yes, some people foresaw a day when a virus could be easily transmitted in a world that has become a global village but for many of us it has been a shock to the system.
Our homes have become our workplaces, gyms, restaurants, schools and staycation means we are now holidaying at home. For some families, grown up children are back at home. It’s been an incredible opportunity for families to spend time together.
On the other hand, there’s the challenge to make our home serve all the new purposes it has acquired. There should be more hands on deck but is that always the case?
It’s time to make-over our lives to help us cope with what’s now being described as the ‘new normal’. All make-overs require an element of decluttering.
I love how Christina Scalise puts it in the quote that says, ‘Clutter is the physical manifestation of unmade decisions fuelled by procrastination’.
With being at home, time can appear to be unending so it’s easy for decisions to remain unmade and for things to be put off. After all, we are home all day tomorrow anyway. Here are some tips:
Declutter your Time
With everyone at home, it’s so easy for your time to be intruded upon especially if you are working from home. Our presence can easily be confused with our availability to serve and meet other people’s needs.
Help your family to understand your available time and honour your own commitments to your job and yourself. Encourage everyone to chip in.
Figure out your priorities
With so many things being done virtually, many groups that you belong to will be creating their own ways to stay connected. In a bid to make up for the lack of physical meetings, many groups will go overboard with new activities forgetting they are one of many groups you belong to.
This means you can easily be bombarded with online activities so you must learn to say no to the things that aren’t important to you. Find ways to be more efficient and productive. Be more intentional about how you spend your time and day.
Declutter your home and office
It is so easy for clutter to build up with everyone at home. Those with little ones may find that their walls have become the perfect canvas for tiny sticky fingers’ creativity.
Teenager’s room may look like a scene from a hurricane movie. And the reality for all of us is that we haven’t really needed more clothes and shoes.
This is a perfect time to declutter the space you’re in especially if more people are now sharing the space. It should be easier to say goodbye to things you haven’t used or missed in the past six months. Do some good while you’re at it by donating to a charity or someone who needs it.
Makeover your finances
Job security is fast becoming a thing of the past as many companies struggle with the crisis. Also many countries have gone into recession with soaring debts from managing the crisis.
This is a time for a finance makeover. Some bills will be higher if adult children are back at home but there will also be opportunities for them to save money which they can either invest or see as disposable income.
Same goes for us. Normal holiday bills may be slashed this year so we can choose to invest this. With time to shop around for services and mortgage providers, you may just find there’s a lot of money to be saved.
Makeover your health
Being at home has its own challenges which can include boredom and frustrations and too often we numb them with food. We have time to experiment with cooking and baking and that means there’s more to eat.
Take stock of your health and put a plan in place to incorporate exercises with a good nutrition plan. Don’t forget your mental, spiritual and emotional health as well.
Makeover your expectations
For many of us, nothing about this year has gone to plan. We can find ourselves stuck in a place of negativity or we can choose to makeover our plans and expectations.
This is a time to be creative about new ways of doing life, family, work and business. Businesses can be taken in a new direction, being laid off work may give you no choice but to finally follow your own dreams or lead you down a path of retraining. Embrace the season’s challenges, opportunities and blessings.
