The ‘Lucky’ Ones
There are certain phrases that make me ponder about their origins; phrases like ‘The Special One’, ‘The Chosen One’ and of course, ‘The Lucky One’.
We all know at least one person who always appears to be lucky or some might prefer the word, ‘blessed’. We can have different reactions to them including rejoicing, being grateful on their behalf or sometimes a tad jealous wishing we had their luck.
Some people would like to have what they haven’t worked or are unwilling to work for. All the wishes or luck in the world will not give you the healthy body you want unless you are willing to do the right things.
My question today is, ‘are people lucky or do we only see the chapters or pages of their lives that create the illusion of luck?’
There are many people that others might consider to be lucky or blessed but I have observed some things about them that is worthy of note.
Lucky people are prepared people
Lucky people are prepared people and many times their preparations are hidden from plain sight. I remember hearing the story of David and Goliath as a child; about a young shepherd boy who killed a giant that a whole army was scared of.
This story has become a backdrop for many events, films and story telling. It is a powerful and inspiring story that also shows that David had been preparing in the backside of the desert with no spectators.
He wasn’t ‘lucky’ to be the one who slain the giant, he just happened to be one who was prepared and ready for the opportunity. Darrell Royal puts it succinctly in the quote which says, “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”
Lucky people work hard
Many times the best people aren’t always the ones that make it; the hardworking ones often go further than anyone expected.
The difference is the amount of effort people are willing to put in. Some people with raw talent waste it and others with half of their talent, show up for practice and consequently, have a more successful career.
Before you deem someone to be lucky, have a look at the effort they are putting in. And before you envy, ask if you have paid the price that they have.
“If your ship doesn’t come in, swim out to it.” Jonathan Winters
Lucky people don’t despise the days of small beginnings
It is great to dream and dream big but rarely does anyone start big. We all have to start from somewhere.
We see ‘lucky people’ when they make it but their big breaks often happen on the back of many small breaks and even setbacks. They are willing to start small while dreaming of their ‘big’ end goals.
“Small opportunities are often the beginning of great enterprises.” Demosthenes
Lucky People spot the opportunities that others miss
Lucky people ‘seem’ to have a sixth sense or special goggles as they spot the opportunities that other miss.
As Ann Landers says, “Opportunities are usually disguised as hard work, so most people don’t recognize them.”
Since the ‘lucky ones’ are not afraid of hard work, they see the opportunities that others bypass, maximise them and make the process look easy afterwards.
Winston Churchill said, “The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity. The optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” So it is safe to say that many ‘lucky ones’ are optimists.
As we start a new week, do you want to be ‘lucky’? If yes, put in the work, stay alert, be ready to take action and wait to be ‘LUCKY’. Congratulations in advance.
