A New Melody

I love music and everything that’s associated with it from dancing to its ability to change moods, atmospheres, inspire, challenge and even it’s power to compel a response from the listeners. One of my joys is discovering new artistes and music.

Each new melody speaks to the listener hopefully as intended by its creator. We all go through changes in life that is akin to creating new melodies because we have to find new ways aka rhythms to navigate the new season.

Each season comes with a different beat, tempo and pace, new contacts, activities, challenges, fears, worries and possibly anxieties; definitely it comes with new hopes, dreams, desires, passion, friendships and visions. These are some of the makings of a new sound coming out from your existence.

We are all co-creators as each day we are given the gift of life, talent, time, creativity, passion, wisdom, guidance and skills to create our day, environment and the world we want to live in. For some people their creation will be a written piece of music, or an art work, sculpture, pottery, drama but all of us get to create the kind of day we want to have and the melody that accompanies or comes forth out of that day.

There was a season in my life when Teletubbies and Tom and Jerry were daily staples but the season gave way to me being a ‘footie, drama, and music’ mum along with myriads of other activities dictating the pace and direction of my movements and life choices. Soon enough the melody switched back to me being a career mum and now a foodie mum; each one of these melodies came with different song partners and dancing shoes.

I love the quote that succinctly describes this as ‘Each new Season, new trial, new change creates a new rhythm, a new melody inside of us. Otherwise, we will find that we have reached the end of our lives and have been dancing to the same song the whole time.’ Unknown

Here are my pointers for creating your new melodies:

Don’t resist the new sound

Let your new season write its own song and work with your creator to create your new sound and melody. The good thing about new sounds is that you can keep perfecting it. There’s no rule that says you’ve only got one take to get the sound right.

Life as a whole is one take but there are as many opportunities as there are days for you.

As Oprah Winfrey said, ‘Do the one thing you think you cannot do. Fail at it. Try again, Do better the second time. The only people who never tumble are those who never mount the high wire. This is your moment. Own it.’

Fight for the new sound

Each new phase of our life will require sacrifices which might even include some of the old habits that previously served us well. There will be those that don’t agree with the new direction because it affects their routines and previous comfort levels with you.

You will get an opportunity to prove how much you are willing to embrace the new sounds so distractions will come to test your commitment and determination.

Take some pointers from two quotes that say, ‘Starve your distractions, feed your focus.’ Unknown and ‘When you really want something you will find a way. When you don’t really want something, you will find an excuse.’ Rachel Hollis

Make plans for the new sound

We must make plans for the new sound or melody otherwise we would be all over the place and going nowhere. As Antoine de Saint-Exupery said, ‘A goal without a plan is just a wish.’

A musician makes a plan to release their single and then their album, they think about collaborating with other artists and plan for this. They consider their publicity and sales strategy and make plans for them. Not planning for each new phase of life is a recipe for disaster.

Show up for yourself

There will be those that judge or criticise your new sound, melody or season because you no longer fit the mould they created for you. They might have something to say or complain about your new choices and sacrifices because they know and are comfortable with the old you.

Your job is not to make others comfortable with changes that you know you must make for the new phase of your life to work out.

Remember this amazing quote from an Unknown writer which says. ‘Brave Girl, promise you will not shrink yourself in order to make others feel comfortable.’ This applies to boys as well.

If someone is judging you, that’s their problem. Don’t make it yours.’ Mel Robbins

Finally remember Maya Angelou saying, ‘‘If you don’t like something, change it. if you can’t change it, change your attitude.’
