Too many of us get stressed by what is meant to be a joyous and festive occasion and a time to enjoy with loved ones. Here are some tips:
Manage your fears
The holidays can sometimes evoke feelings of anxiety and stress, especially when we feel pressured to meet expectations. However, as Franklin D. Roosevelt wisely stated, fear itself can be our greatest enemy. Don’t let the fear of perfectionism or the pressure to please everyone overshadow the joy of the season.
The need for perfection sometimes makes us forget that this is not a do or die situation and even the worst possible Christmas dinner disasters aren’t the end of the world. Our friends and family members will still love us regardless.
Put things into perspective
One year, my way of managing the fanfare that can be ‘Christmas dinner’ was to redefine it as a ‘glorified Sunday lunch’. I reminded myself that many of the Christmas dinner components featured in my Sunday lunches so there was no reason for this to be any more stressful than the weekly dinners.
Embrace the Chaos
The holiday season can sometimes feel like a whirlwind of events, shopping lists, and social gatherings. It’s easy to get caught up in the chaos and forget to take a breath. Remember, it’s okay to embrace the craziness but with a twist of humour. As Charles M. Schulz once said, “Christmas is doing a little something extra for someone.” If that something extra happens to be laughing at your own holiday mishaps, so be it.
Cut yourself some slack
Monica Galetti’s phrase on MasterChef, “You had a lot of Sou and no ffle,” reminds us that sometimes our efforts don’t translate into the desired results. This can be true for the holidays too.
Despite meticulous planning, things may not go as expected—a burnt batch of cookies, a last-minute gift scramble, forgetting to serve a side dish, or a failed attempt at decorating the perfect gingerbread house. Laugh it off and remember that these mishaps make for great stories in the years to come.
Prioritize Self-Care
