Finding Strength in Challenging Times
In life, challenges are inevitable. Whether they come in the form of personal struggles, unexpected setbacks, or global crises, these moments test our resilience and resolve. A global health crisis followed by a global recession and wars in many parts of the world have brought many challenges to all nations of the world with the average person feeling the brunt of it.
In my previous post, we explored managing mental health during challenging times. Today, let’s go deeper into discovering how to find strength when everything feels overwhelming. Strength, after all, is not the absence of struggle—it is the ability to keep moving forward, even when the path is uncertain.
As author Joseph Campbell once said, “Opportunities to find deeper powers within ourselves come when life seems most challenging.” The question, then, is not whether challenges will arise but how we can use them to build our inner strength.
Acceptance: The First Step to Strength
The first step in finding strength is accepting the situation. Often, our initial response to adversity is resistance—wishing things were different, or that the challenges would simply go away. However, this resistance can drain our energy, leaving us feeling stuck. Acceptance does not mean giving up or resigning yourself to defeat; rather, it means acknowledging the reality of the situation and understanding that it is part of life’s ebb and flow.
When we accept that challenges are inevitable, we free ourselves from the burden of fighting what we cannot control. Instead, we can focus our energy on what we can control—our mindset, our actions, and how we respond to difficulties. As the stoic philosopher Epictetus said, “It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.”
Focusing on What You Can Control
In times of uncertainty, the feeling of losing control can be overwhelming. The key to finding strength is to shift your attention to the things within your control, no matter how small they seem. This could be something as simple as maintaining a routine, choosing to take care of your health, or deciding to ask for support from others.
Remember, every action you take towards growth and healing, no matter how small, contributes to your inner strength. Break your challenges down into manageable steps and tackle them one at a time. When we focus on small wins, we regain a sense of control and start to build momentum. Strength grows from taking consistent, positive action—even when those steps seem insignificant at first.
Finding Purpose in the Struggle
One of the most powerful ways to find strength is by discovering a sense of purpose during adversity. Sometimes, the greatest struggles teach us the most valuable lessons. Think of the difficulties you’ve faced in the past—how did they shape who you are today?
What strengths did you discover in yourself during those moments? Reflecting on these experiences can help you see the purpose within the struggle.
In challenging times, you can also create purpose by helping others. Acts of service and kindness can shift your focus outward and give you a renewed sense of connection and meaning. Whether it’s offering support to a friend, volunteering in your community, or simply being a source of positivity for those around you, these actions not only uplift others but also build your own inner strength.
Strength Through Support
Finding strength doesn’t mean going it alone. In fact, one of the strongest things you can do is reach out for help. Whether it’s leaning on friends, family, or professional support, connection provides us with the strength to keep going. It’s okay to admit when you’re struggling, and it’s okay to seek comfort and guidance.
As Brené Brown says, “Courage is not about knowing the path. It’s about taking the first step.” Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it—it is a sign of strength, not weakness.
As you navigate the challenges ahead, remember that strength is not about doing it all perfectly or without struggle. It’s about learning to accept, adapt, and keep moving forward. Take small, consistent actions to manage what you can control, seek purpose in your trials, and don’t be afraid to reach out for support.
Today, reflect on one challenge you are facing. How can you change your mindset or take one small action to shift your perspective? What strength can you find within yourself through this situation?
Strength isn’t something we are born with—it’s something we build, day by day. In times of difficulty, it’s the small, steady steps that will guide you to greater resilience, clarity, and peace. Embrace the journey because there will be growth at the end of it.
