Purposeful Me

Another Day To Get It Right – Seize It!

I don’t know about you but it feels like July has snuck up me and come around quicker than expected.

It’s that time of the year when I can’t but look at where the past six months have gone and ask the tough questions, ‘Have I made the best of the past six months? Am I where I hoped I would be and have I done the things I wanted to do?’

For some things the answer is yes and for others it is a ‘No’ but what matters is not the past six months but the next six months. I can’t go back and re-live the past six months but I can make some tweaks to make sure I can look back at the end of the year and know that I made the second half count.

So my question to you is, ‘When today is gone, what would you have exchanged it for?’ Something good or something bad?

Would your today have been spent wisely or poorly? What will be left behind when today is gone?

Why does today matter? It’s because it’s the only day we really have and many todays make months and many months make years and many years make a lifetime. To make our lives count, it stands to reason that we must learn to make our ‘todays’ count.

Every day is a gift. Some say time is a currency and once it is spent, it is gone and what you have left is what you exchanged your currency for.

Are you redeeming your time well? Are you seizing your moments and days? Are you happy with what you exchanged your yesterdays for? If not, today is another day to get it right.

The gift of today, which comes with its own opportunities and choices cannot be replaced or refunded, but you can exchange it for something worthwhile.

I love this letter which I recently came across:

Normal day,

Let me be aware of the treasure you are. Let me learn from you, love you, bless you before you depart. Let me not pass you by in quest for some rare and perfect tomorrow. Let me hold you while I may, for it may not always be so.

One day I shall dig my nails into the earth, or bury my face in the pillow, or stretch myself taut, or raise my hands to the sky and want, more than all the world, your return.” Mary Jean Irion

That’s a letter from a woman who understands the gift that today is and who knows that one day that gift will no longer be available.

To live a life of purpose demands that we start to better appreciate the gift of each day and making sure we take steps daily that help us to discover and fulfil our purpose.

Some simple tips

  • Be thankful to God for the gift of every new day
  • Figure out what you want to accomplish today, this week, month, or year
  • Write your vision down and make it clear
  • Create the steps that will get you to your end game
  • Make a decision not to do unnecessary things until you’ve done some necessary ones
  • Show up everyday to complete the actions, take stock and make tweaks as necessary. Wake up and Repeat

Remember that each day, the sun rises for you, the stars shine for you, the birds sing for you, the flowers bloom just for you.

Your response to all of these and more is to appreciate what you have been blessed with and the Giver of all good gifts. So get up and make today count.

hmmm, I can’t go back to re-live the past months but I can do something about the next 6months. I must make the decision not to do unnecessary things until I’ve done the necessary ones…..valuable words.

    God bless you Sister Yemi!

Many thanks for this timely post. Indeed every day is a precious gift from God and we need to use it wisely. This is in line with this quotation from the prayer of Moses in Psalm 90:12 – “So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”

May God continue to inspire you.

    Thanks,
    William Adelekan.
